Santorini History , Greece
Santorini Island is one of the most impressive destinations and is host to thousands of visitors every year. It has played a major role throughout the history of Greece and more specifically the Cycladic civilization, during which the island was called "Kallisti" (the beautiful one) and "Stroggyli" (the round one). Then in about 1,500 BC, a volcanic eruption took place that totally changed the island's appearance, providing Santorini with an array of dramatic physical characteristics. The current name of the island is Thira or Santorini (or Santa Irene, the name given to the island by the Venetians during their rule).
Santorini Beaches, Greece
The volcanic eruption resulted in the creation of some of the most stunning beaches in the world such as the Red Beach and the White Beach in Akrotiri, the Black Beaches in Perissa, Perivolos, Monolithos and Kamari and the White Beach, as well as the beautiful beaches of Armenaki, Ammoudi, Baxedes, Katharos, Koloubos, Pori, Vlychada and Vourvoulou.
Santorini Sites & Attractions, Greece
Santorini has a long history, as evidenced by the archaeological and historical sites on the island. While in Santorini we suggest you visit the Minoan City in Akrotiri, the relics of the ancient cemetery in Phinikia and the ancient ruins of the City of Thira as well as the Venetian castles, the monasteries and churches and the Archaeological, Folklore and Maritime Museums. Another worthwhile activity is a day trip to the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni and Thirasia, which are situated opposite Santorini.
Santorini Cuisine
Don't forget to try the local delicacies at the traditional ouzeries and taverns, such as tomato balls, fried white aubergines and fava (lentil dip) and of course, Santorinian wine. For souveniers of the island, you can choose Santorinian artwork and handicrafts.
You can reach Santorini Island from a number of places in Greece.
The island is connected to Athens and Thessaloniki as well as several other Greek Islands by sea and air.
